Status of visitation numbers

The visitor monitoring service presents consistently updating information on both destinations (protected or hiking area, historical site, visitor centre) and counting sites used to count the number of visits in destinations.

The NASTA visitor monitoring solution for Metsähallitus National Parks Finland was completed in spring 2024 and it is being used for visitor monitoring as of 1 January 2024. The visitor monitoring service contains also data on number of visits in destinations prior to 2024, imported from the previously used ASTA customer information system. The previous data on the number of visits in destinations is available on an annual level, but also on a monthly level, if monthly figures were available from the previous system.

Method, concepts and data content

Visitor counting takes place at counting sites where the visitor counter is located. The visitor counter sends out readings, such as visitors by foot in and visitors by foot out. Some calculators also count cyclists separately. In some sites, visitor flows can best be calculated with a car counter. In all cases, the calculator readings produced by the visitor counter are multiplied by the correction coefficient, which gives the number of visits per counting site.

Counting site specific data is updated to the visitor monitoring service once a week on Monday mornings by approximately 8 a.m. if the destination has a remotely readable visitor counter. Otherwise, the data is only transferred when the counter is read at the counting site.

In the NASTA system, the number of visits in destinations is calculated by experts on the basis of the number of visits per counting site and the counting parameters. Once the numbers have been checked, they will be marked as finished, after which they will be displayed in the visitor monitoring service. The aim is to publish the number of visits in destinations once a month, by the 15th of the following month.

In the first phase, the number of destinations in the visitor monitoring service will be limited, and the information will be supplemented gradually.

The annual statistics for 2024 will be completed in January 2025.
