Juha S. Niemelä, Director General of Metsähallitus, has been appointed President of the European State Forest Association (EUSTAFOR) for the next two-year term.
EUSTAFOR is an umbrella organisation for European state forest organisations that are engaged in sustainable forestry. The organisation was established in 2006, with Metsähallitus as one of its founding members.
EUSTAFOR promotes sustainable forestry and serves as a forum for cooperation and exchange of information. In addition to forestry, the organisation also works on energy issues, tourism and recreation, fishing and hunting, and nature conservation. Additionally, EUSTAFOR monitors EU affairs and is a forum for participating in the preparation of forest-related matters in the EU.
EUSTAFOR currently consists of 36 organisations from 25 European countries and has an office in Brussels.
-Regulations on forests have increased in number and will continue to increase significantly in the coming years. It is important that state forest organisations have their own office in Brussels, where they can monitor and influence these matters. Leading EUSTAFOR’s activities as President in the Executive Committee is an honour and a great opportunity, Juha Niemelä explains.
